Dialing in to a New Year

It's another January 1.  It rolled in, plowing past the Thanksgiving turkey, waving at the menorah, knocking over stockings, and screeching past the tree.  And, if you are really honest, it said "boo" with the Halloween aisle appearing at Target. (I apologize up front, if I missed your 'holiday'). When I was a little girl, my grandma had this bronze/brass dial contraption on her living room shelf.  It allowed you to 'dial' to a year in the future or past, line it up with your year of birth, and see how old you would be in that year.  Or, dial to a specific age and find out what year it would be.  You get the picture?  (If you have any idea what this masterful trinket is called, do tell!  Of course I know simple math could do these calculations, but what fun is that?) While I don't have a clear memory of dialing into 2015 - I can assure you I would have never pictured myself living in Massachusetts, wife to a smart and handsome guy, mother through adoption and fertility, and being a college administrator and part-time business owner.  Never.  My life was limited to the greater east-central Illinois geography, including...

Time to (Wo)man up!

I have a few pet peeves in this world.  And, aren't you the lucky ones who get to hear me rant about them today?  Seriously - you woke up this morning, and thought - "gee, I can't wait to hear someone rant about her issues and hang-ups!"  I know that is what you thought of right before your first cup of coffee.  Before I launch into those - a few disclaimers - my examples used in this post are not any type of attack - I think it is LAME to use on-line media to do such things.  I'm not using any names, changing a few details, and it is truly to illustrate an EXAMPLE.  Got it? So, with those disclaimers/ramblings, let's continue.... 1.  When someone says, in reference to an athletic skill/feat, "You threw like a girl" or "Stop being a girl" or when a man says to another group of men, "Hey ladies, how about you start working harder?"  <my skin is crawling just thinking about it.> 2.  When someone, in reference to working out, says, "I don't have the time." (now you must know I have more pet peeves than this - but these are connected, I swear). Now - why either...

Sitting on the Sidelines

image   As many of you know I have been benched for awhile with an injury. I'm not going to go into details because it even bores me to talk about it. What I do want to talk about is that injuries are a reality that most of us will face. If you have never suffered from some sort of issue I officially hate you, oh and you are also really lucky. If this is you, stop reading this and buy a lottery ticket, go NOW! For the rest of us injuries happen. When you challenge yourself with demanding workouts great things happen, we all know that, with great risk comes great reward, right? However, we walk a fine line and sometimes things will pop up ( or flare up). When you are used to pushing your limits and then all of sudden you are sitting on the sidelines it can be really hard, devastating actually. I have had some time to think about this and I think I finally have some perspective.  If (or when) you have to take a break you will go through some phases ... 1. Denial: you keep...

Lost Combination

Step by step.  Day by day. Little by little. You have an overwhelming task in front of you.  There are two paths you could potentially be riding out in your fitness and wellness journey.  In one scenario you have taken on the challenge of some ultimate wellness goal - maybe it's losing a large amount of weight.  Maybe it's running a marathon. Possibly overhauling your nutrition?  Yikes.  Whatever it is ... the task  is daunting. The other scenario involves ... spinning your wheels.  It's like a bad anxiety dream.  <side bar:  My anxiety dream always involves being at my high school, trying to get to class, and forgetting my locker combination.  Oy.  I'm almost 38 years old and I wake up sweating because the dream ends with me visiting the school office trying to demand my combination ... and no one will listen.>  You get the picture.  Except ... in this scenario it's you showing up to your fitness routine.  Day in.  Day out.  Annoyed.  Or, just plodding forward. Here's the deal. In either scenario, you are the star baby!  BUT -- During the first sequence, you can get a little lost wandering towards the finish line. For the latter, you are lacking vitality and enjoyment...

Excitified??

No, that's not a typo. It's a word I made up ...because I can! ex.cit.i.fied -  to be terrified and excited at the same time. I love my new word because it sums up the feeling I have had before, or during, the most important events in my life. There have been many of these events, here's just a short list: Going away to college, the first day teaching in my own classroom,  my first date with my future husband, my wedding day, the birth of my children, running my first 5k, running my first  half-marathon, the first day of MOXIE. We've all been there right? You fluctuate between staying or going, you think "why am I doing this? I have lost my mind? It's not too late to leave/escape/hide!"  I now know you have to embrace this feeling. It proves you are alive and that you CARE. It's okay to feel this way, but don't let it stop you from doing what you want or what is right.

Simple Math

"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;"

Maybe it was here.  Or maybe it was in a conversation somewhere.  But, really, I think it was something that I read.  It was in relation to push-ups.  Super exciting, I know.  I was on this quest - well, really it was a goal, to get a full push-up.   Well, get many full push-ups.  Within this article I read about a woman's journey from being virtually immobile to a CrossFit junkie, she talked about push-ups.  Like - hey, if you only do 'girl push-ups' (seriously, we are set-up from the beginning to not have upper body strength...), you will only get good at 'girl push-ups.'  So, duh, if I only practice this way, I will only perfect this way.  Not THAT way, the way I WANT. So, my push-up journey began.  And, it continues.  But, I always - like 90% of the time - try to insert the full push-up.  Even if it is 5 out of 20. Such a simple concept.  Want a different result ......

What’s it Worth To Ya?

I’m Baaaaaaaacccckkkk! Hello fellow Moxie Chicks!!   I know it has also been a while since I have written a blog (I actually work at work now, it cuts into my blogging time…even though I am on work time right now), so frankly, I hope this one doesn’t suck eggs. I recently found myself in a conversation about food and workouts with a friend.  How many of you out there are wondering if it is you???  While discussing what we had done during the week for workouts and what we had eaten, my friend said “I see these people doing new/different types of workouts, like x, y, and z.  Some people get results, but a lot don’t, are these new workouts even worth it?”  At the time I didn’t think much of it, and just said……”yes, I like them”. I am oh so deep.  Later, I got to thinking (never a good thing), is it worth it, I mean really?  I have 3 fitness memberships these days…is it worth it or am I just a nut bar? Now to save you all the trouble of posting that I am a nut bar, I will say it first.  I am a nut bar!  But besides that is it...

Eggs, Bread and Milk

Let’s put it out there – it’s been awhile since our last blog. Oh, I’m sorry – you have tons of free time and creative/organized thoughts on a weekly basis?  Didn’t think so.  Yup, just being a little defensive here… And, let’s get another thing out there – I’m not going to address the darkness that meets me every Moxie morning … and greets me as I leave Moxie.  Nope.  Gonna leave that out there for people to work through.  I can’t tell you what to do.  Well, I can, but that’s another blog. However, I recently had a life experience that compelled me to blog.  <That, and I receive harassing emails from a client that sends me the link to our blog, with just question marks and a sad emoticon.>  Now listen, I retell the story not in a grand dramatic way, with swelling music in the background.  This is really, just a moment that clicked something over in my head. So, rewind a week or so ago to my trip to the grocery store.  I was there purchasing items for work.  In my ‘real life’ full-time job I work with college students, so you can draw whatever picture you’d like as to why I...

I’ve got the Powahhhhh, Powahhhhhh!

So, over the past few years I have come to know Karen and Rachel fairly well.  I can tell you for sure, in the time I have become infinitely more cheesy…..cheesier if you will.  I now try to think in tag lines (mostly to come up with the titles for these blogs), don’t think schmaltz is necessarily a bad thing, and actually believe today’s blog topic.  The topic is…drum roll please……The Power of Positivity.  See cheesy…don’t everyone X out at once, the blog will be good! I blame you our dear trainers for my newly found cheese factor, I blame you! I think that almost every Moxie workout is EXTREMELY hard.  You all have seen me; I sweat through my clothes and am filthy at the end of every workout.  But some workouts are fun (a.k.a The Gauntlet…even if I am the only one who thinks so), and some just…lets be frank…SUCK!  This morning (today being Friday of week 4) was a tough one for me.  I typically don’t enjoy the timed AMRAP workouts as much as some of the others, but they are still awesome.  Anyway, I was trying to do toe pushups and I could only do 3 at...
